Gee, it's been nearly ten years, but way back then I was heavily involved in the Rust email-discussion group. Guess what the main subject of the group was...

I dunno if Rust is still around, but they were crazy active then. I had to eventually remove myself from it because even with getting only the digest posts, my mailbox was getting hit 8-10 times a day, with about a hundred emails per digest! I had no time to read anything anymore.

Before I left though, I made a lot of great trades with a lot of great traders. And I participated in probably every "tree" they ran for a couple of years, getting all the new shows and compilations that people were putting out. (This was before file-sharing and common high-speed Internet access, kids. Way back when dinosaurs and boy bands walked the earth!)

This is a really neat compilation that the Rusties put together of all cover tunes. I think there was an earlier volume but if there was I don't have it.

When I got into bootleg trading, all by mail back in the dark ages, I hooked up with a lot of very serious and often secretive traders. This is one of three I got in exchange from a fellow who wouldn't take any of my collection in exchange - I had to make him full-color art for each show. So I did. And I had to provide the art before I got the music! Very odd.

But it was worth it because they are some of my favorite Neil boots. Of the three, I picked this one first because I don't know how widely available any of these solo Trans-tour shows are. I've got the other two ripped and ready to upload, too, don't fret. (Sorry, but that art is long gone in a fabulous blaze of crashing harddrives...)

Neil Young - Live at QualityBootz!

QualityBootz is incredible. I don't know where Mr. QB finds the time to put up as much music as he does; it takes me about three hours to get one show ready, from rip to post. Truly amazing, folks.

And one thing he does great is post lots of Neil Young - around fifty or so now and growing, growing. If he has a show posted and the links are still live, I won't be duplicating it. And I'll never catch up to him on posts unless I quit my job, so make sure you check him out.

Why this show from the Greendale tour? Because WE WHERE THERE! Beautiful Wisconsin summer evening, though maybe a bit cool (must've been the lake because it was much warmer elsewhere).My Smart Wife and I had a great time. Bought Crazy Horse caps for the two of us and The Boy. Still proudly worn by all family members. Mine is really sweat-stained, though. Shouldn't have worn it mowing the lawn all those times.

Two favorite memories: Neil's massive fleet of shiny new red Lionel trucks hauling all the tour gear (presumably his portable train set tucked in one or two of them) and the incredible encore. They lowered the massive vintage keyboard on cables from the rafters, draped in weird shrouds, for "Like a Hurricane"! Pretty sure it was the same damn keyboard used in the day, comparing my memory with pics I've seen from those late 70s shows. And "Mr. Soul" was very, very strange. Neil had to goad Crazy Horse into it. They were actually shaking their heads "No!" to him as he played the intro. Neil stamped all over the stage, shaking his guitar at the band until they finally played one of the loosest, most effed-up versions I've ever heard.

What better way to kick off Nothin' But Neil than with the weirdest Neil Young bootleg of all (IMHO).

The Ducks were a Santa Cruz super-group of sorts that briefly including Neil, who was restricted from touring with The Ducks due to contractual obligations. So they only played in Santa Cruz for a brief time in 1977. Go here for more on the brief, odd history of The Ducks.

Live Music Is Better

Way too much of my brain is devoted to all-things Neil Young-related. I can't contain it safely any longer. I've reached maximum-Neil.

Thus, Nothin' But Neil.

Over the last decade I've collected a couple hundred Neil Young bootlegs and while there are some great blogs out there that have posted live Neil, I haven't found one that's specifically devoted to nothin' but Neil...until now.

I'm also going to blatantly advertise Neil Young product here, because if you like the free stuff I think you should be willing to pony up and pay the man for his work. I'm not charging you for what I'm offering, so do the right thing and buy an album. Or a DVD. Or just an MP3. I don't care, just buy.

I'm not posting boots in MP3 format like I've done on previous blogs. All files will CD-quality FLAC format only. You can convert them to crappy MP3s yourself if you want to.

If I have artwork, I'll post it, but I don't have time to make any. Feel free to supply it and I'll make it available for all.
